CH.1-

When Gerard had decided to skip third period he had assumed he would be spending the rest of his “school day” at the back of his rust machine chain-smoking, not sitting at Moe’s sipping sodas and milkshakes with his little brother like he was nine again.

”So are you going to tell me what happened or what?” Gerard asked whilst her stirred his half-drunken chocolate shake.

Mikey looked up from his untouched Cola. “I—I…” he bit his lip and set his face into a concentrated stare before opening his mouth again, “I asked, Lucy Limber, out,”

”Who?”

Mikey shot Gerard a small for the fact that he had brought Lucy up on several different occasions, in detail. “Girl from school,” he said simply.

Gerard nodded. “And let me guess, she said no?”

Mikey bit his lip again nodding looking like he was baiting away tears.

Gerard sighed. “Listen, Mikey—I know that sucks and all but you just have to—“

”They all laughed at me,” Mikey suddenly said.

”What? Wait—who laughed at you?” Gerard asked leaning over the unwashed table to hear is his brother’s subdued response, silently taking a note in his head to beat whoever they were.

”Everybody. Everybody was laughing.”

Gerard wasn’t sure what to say now; the only response that managed to slip past his lips was a half-decent “oh”. He couldn’t beat up everybody.

It wasn’t as if Gerard hadn’t had his shared time of being laughed at. If it wasn’t because some short-term embarrassment it was his weight.

”And it’s not just today either!” Mikey said glowering down at his soda, that he had taken to cupping in his open palms. “They’re always shoving me, pushing me, and making me do things that I just don’t want to do! And in the one moment I finally get my ‘stuff’ together…” Mikey trailed off for a moment, heaving, “I’m just fucking sick of it!”

Gerard was taken aback by Mikey’s hot-blooded confession. It had been the first time in awhile that Mikey had cussed, and the last time had been because he had a nail stuck in his foot.

Gerard really wanted to say like their dad had once said to him, that they’d give up and “grow up” after a year or so. But if there was one thing that Gerard couldn’t tolerate it was wishful thinking and downright lying. He decided he would lighten the mood on his own terms. Gerard thought for a moment then forced a laugh.

Mikey looked up from his soda. “What’s so funny?” he asked a little annoyed.

”Oh it’s nothing.” Gerard said dismissively still smiling, and taking a long sip of his chocolate milkshake.

”No. Tell me.” Mikey insisted.

Gerard drew his mouth away from his straw and replaced where his mouth had been with his fingers as he began to stir it around almost flamboyantly. “Hm? Tell you what?” Gerard said holding back a playful smile.

”Geraaard.” Mikey said with a warning tone that he must’ve picked up from their mother.

Since you asked so nicely,” Mikey shot him a look, “I’ll tell you,” Gerard took a breath. “Do you remember when I was selected by my art class to represent the school in that art competition that one year?” Gerard asked.

”How could I forget it! You wouldn’t come out of your room for weeks after that!” Mikey said with a small smile on his face.

”Yeah, I was so excited! I couldn’t believe that I had been picked, I really thought that they would have picked that Jeremy Louis kid.” he said tiny small spreading across his face in remembrance of how shocked and happy he had been.

Mikey snorted. “As if!”

Gerard ignored Mikey’s comment and continued. “Then, once I was done I had brought it back to the school to show Ms. Carter, she hadn’t been there that day so I had thought I would leave it there for her to see in the morning, thinking it would be safe in the class,” Gerard’s face twisted. “Then when I came back the next day I had found out the entire art room had been trashed, along with my painting. Completely ruined! Apparently the basketball team had a game that night in the gym and thought it would be funny to take their loss out on the art room. I had been so pissed off after that. Wouldn’t go to class or anything. I just couldn’t believe that they could be that…” Gerard trailed off, not wanting to say anymore. The memory still taunted him.

Mikey looked at Gerard with a look of compassion and bitter bewilderment, “What the hell is so funny about that?”

Gerard looked up at Mikey with an expression of complete honesty. “Nothing, but it did make you forget about that stupid bimbo didn’t it?”

Mikey’s nose wrinkled. “That’s cheesy, Gerard!”

Gerard shrugged his shoulders. “Well I guess I’m just cheesy then. But hey it works for me.”

Mikey didn’t respond to Gerard’s ‘quip’, and turned his attention to his drink. The two brothers drank their drinks in awkward silence, no words could be spoken to make the situation between them and their school lives any better.

When Gerard had at last opened his mouth to speak he was interrupted by a loud banging noise coming from beside their booth by the window.

BANG!
BANG!
BANG!

There was a pause then.

BANG!
BANG!

The both of them looked over and were granted to non-other than Frank Iero’s grinning face. Mikey and Gerard stayed seated where they were not knowing how to respond to that. The waitress that had been serving the two of them was now shouting at Frankie to cut it out and making unheard threats to call the police if he kept it up.

Frankie mimed a shrug through the glass, and held up a bag of Tostitos in a corny way of tempting Mikey to come out and talk to him. He continued to point and smile in Mikey’s direction.

Mikey just rolled his eyes and nodded to Frank. “Looks like I’m wanted elsewhere,”

Gerard stopped looking at Frank, who was now jumping up and down anxiously, and looked up at Mikey who was pulling on his school blazer.

”Gerard?”
“Yeah, Mikey?”
”Thanks.”

Gerard shrugged. “No problem, bro’.” Mikey offered him a half-hearted wave, which Gerard returned, and left the diner to meet Frank. Gerard sat there in the booth watching Mikey and Frank’s retreating backs as they walked in some foreign direction to some unknown location.

Gerard signaled the waitress to show that he was ready to pay for his and Mikey’s drinks, she came over shortly after with a smile on her worn face and printed receipt at hand. “Have a nice day, hun’.” she said with a thick Jersey accent and left to wait on another couple that just came in.

Things could have gone better, Gerard had thought. He hadn’t realized how corny his tactics of tackling the situation had been till after he had sat on it for a moment. He had foolishly thought if he had shared a bit of his own experiences Mikey would feel more comfortable expressing his own to him. He almost felt like it would have been better if he had given Mikey false hopes, but he knew it would be better for him in the long run.

This didn’t mean that Gerard wasn’t going to try and help Mikey in the short run, just like Frank was doubtlessly doing at the moment. He was after all Mikey’s big brother, and if anyone messed with Mikey they messed with him. But Gerard was pretty sure that Lucy was a chick, and Gerard didn’t beat on chicks. Gerard had to admit though that Mikey had been very brave if not stupid to do what he had done.

The older Way sat in the booth and in his own thoughts for quite awhile after just thinking and idly drinking and refilling his milkshake with the stainless steal cup that was given to him earlier. He waited, and waited, and waited till a few ideas popped into his head and he excitedly grabbed a napkin out of the napkin dispenser and pulled it towards him. He then took the pen that the waitress had left with his bill and began writing on the napkin with new purpose and a new smile on his face. Gerard was going to make Mikey’s day yet.

Prologue-

Mikey bit his lip painfully hard; he still hadn’t calmed down his nerves. His stomach was doing all sorts of back-flips, side-flips, and flip-flops; it was driving him into an uptight frenzy. Finally after a moment of procrastination he stumbled awkwardly over to the objects of his affections.

Lucy Limber.

Lucy was talking with a few of her friends in the hallway by her locker, books still at hand from her last class. He tapped her shoulder lightly, “Excuse me,” he said timidly. Lucy turned around to look at him.

“Yeah?” she said with a tart tone, looking Mikey up and down with her big green expressionless eyes, “What do you want?”

Mikey adjusted his glasses so they sat neatly on the bridge of his nose, “I-I wa-as wond-d-dering if-if-if you’d…” he trailed off, finding his words being caught in his throat by invisible snarling monster of ineptness.

“If-if-if I?” Lucy mocked her mouth agape as she waited for Mikey to finish, her friends were giggling madly over her shoulder making Mikey feel even more self-conscious.

“If you’d, if you’d like to go see a movie with me… sometime.” Mikey finished shyly, looking down at his beat-up white sneakers.

“Go to the movies… with you?” she had asked acting as if she hadn’t heard him correctly. Mikey only nodded this time not bothering to say anything because he wasn’t sure if he could say another word without throwing up.

More giggles could be heard, and Mikey could have sworn he could hear Lucy’s voice enroll with her friends. “Oh my god!” the giggling grew louder, and Mikey’s ears and cheeks became red with embarrassment. “I can’t believe you just said that! That’s too funny! Oh my god!” Mikey wanted to run more then ever now, he knew this had been a bad idea all along. He should’ve listened to Frank.

Then…

“Of course I’ll go to the movies with you!” Mikey’s head snapped up her words.

“Really?” he asked, face breaking into a timid smile.

“NO!” Lucy half-shouted at him, his stomach dropped, and he felt tears sting his eyes. “Holy shit! You’re the biggest fattest nerd in the fucking school! Why the hell would I ever want to go out with you!” laughter grew obnoxiously loud around him, and Mikey noticed that they had attracted a small crowd who were now either gawking or laughing at him

Mikey couldn’t stand it anymore, he had to get away. He bolted, not stopping for anything or anyone, not even when the principal kept shouting out profanities about no running in the school hallways. Mikey just kept running till he reached the parking lot of the school, where he recognized a beat up old black car parked jaggedly over the yellow lines of a parking space. Mikey collapsed onto the hood of the car crying softly, feeling reassured that it’s owner would be here soon to find and comfort him.
